Google Is Now Warning Businesses About Fake Reviews And Taking Action - Kontempo Digital

Google has started sending direct emails to business owners when it finds fake or incentivised reviews on their Google Business Profiles. The emails don’t just flag the problem; they confirm the reviews have already been removed.

The warning message from Google reads clearly:

This is not a soft warning. Repeat violations could result in a business profile being restricted entirely.

The development was spotted by local SEO expert Ben Fisher, who shared a screenshot of the email on X. It lines up with Google quietly updating its local review policies just last week and a wave of reviews disappearing from business listings around the same time.

What “Restrictions” Actually Mean

Google hasn’t spelled out exactly what happens next. But its existing policies give a pretty clear picture:

  • Review removal: Already confirmed. Fake or paid reviews get wiped without notice.
  • Profile suspension: Your entire listing disappears from Google Maps and Search. Customers can’t find you.
  • Loss of review management:  You may lose the ability to respond to reviews on your profile.
  • Permanent profile removal:  In severe or repeated cases, the listing is gone for good.

Google has not published an exact penalty tier system. But the direction is clear: the more violations found, the worse the outcome.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Incentivised reviews have always been against Google’s rules. Offering discounts, freebies, or any reward in exchange for a 5-star review breaks those terms full stop. Many businesses assumed the risk was low. That assumption no longer holds.

Google’s AI systems already scan incoming reviews for suspicious patterns. More 5-star fake reviews get removed than 1-star ones, according to the Google Business Profile community, which tells you how common the practice actually is.

If a competitor is gaming their reviews, the right move is to report it through Google’s Business Resolution Form and include proof, screenshots of contests, payment offers, or suspicious review spikes.

The smarter long-term play? Build reviews the right way. Provide great service, then follow up and ask clients to share their honest experience.

That approach never gets your profile restricted.
